I’m work as a southern Ohio election official and we did away with voting machines but even when we had machines they were never connected to an outside network. The machines also recorded and printed a print out of every single ballet.

Motherfuckers forgot about DRE. Also, did anyone hear about the machine in Europe that added 4096 votes because it got hit with a cosmic ray?

We got new machines this year. My voting precinct did not seem amused by my comment that thank goodness they'd replaced the others because we'd learned to hack them, with a pen, in under 2 minutes on Last Week Tonight.

It's crazy when a Brit makes more sense than American ways... "Hmm, the brits may have be right about this one..." If we know electronic election ballots can be forged or mistaken why doesn't someone do something about that? "Well we've tried..." end of discussion... NO! It's not! If the USA has the power to hold top secret documents for decades they can at least hold election results unhampered for a few days.

I like what we have in Washington: it is 100% paper ballots, you have to either mail back the filled in ballot or drop it off at city hall before the deadline. There is no polling station. I don't know exactly how the vote counting works, but we don't have to worry about someone messing with voting machines or them failing due to lack of maintenance. You can hack anything, but you can't hack a pen.

If they connect the voting machines to a secure modem and dial into a specific network that is an INTRANET and is a closed system that isn't on the World Wide Web. Lots of industries use intranets.

Low tech is answer. Paper ballots, a number 2 pencil. Ballots tallied by IBM optical reader not connected to the internet. Voting locations are already monitored by both parties. The grand tally at each location can be carried to an air gap central computer for compilation. It's slower, but accurate.

Lol it's kind of funny, we used to have voting machines in the Netherlands, but after some controversy, we got rid of them. Now it's 2019, and we still cast votes using a red pencil, and the votes are publicly counted, by hand, by volunteers. Publicly as in, anyone can walk in and sit there and watch them count the votes XD. At least I'm pretty sure it's legit XD It might be a better choice for the US. No 'hanging Chads', no computers! Just a goddamned pencil checking a box.

Came back to check out John oliver remembering the good reports in season 1, but I'm dumbstruck that hes STILL out here SMEARING 3rd parties. Jill Stein was one of the best candidates running in 2012 and 2016. Get TF out of here. Trump is a symptom of the lack of progressive change we got from Obama era. Great job, John. Keep the ridiculous Russia hysteria propaganda alive. I would think that by now, after doing this show for several years, having covered so many important topics that show how the government always lies to the public, you wouldn't help paddle such bullshit. That Bachelor Chads joke was pretty solid though, lol. I'll give you that.

Leave it to John Oliver to talk about things he doesn't understand. You see... MODEMs are used to make point-to-point connection. If endpoint is internet node, than it is internet. If not - you have kind of VPN by default, inaccessible for modern day script-kiddies.

Note that once again, it's the REPUBLICAN controlled Senate that votes to keep the existing, broken DRE (paperless) system. There is nothing else you need to know about these crooks, except to note which states still use these bastard devices. Texas, Florida ... The Red States. Exactly.

  • FooBar Maximus

The ACM/CSA testified before Congress and implored them to include a hard-copy audit trail, years ago. Congress said no and fuck it and now we have a system that can't be audited in real terms. But they CAN be hacked. We have the worst election system of any "advanced" country. It's terrible. I'm a computer scientist - so yeah, I know what I'm talking about.

Here in Australia we still do all of our voting on paper. This is counted by hand. Each of the parties have people there to watch you count votes and if they think you may have done it wrong or vote is close they make you count them again, and again, and again.

I don’t trust the elected over 500,000 government officials and barely trust the ones that I do vote for. Of course there are questions of how they are counted. Even if they’re counted by hand, how would we know that someone didn’t lose track? There is human error and there should be double and triple checks. Independent organization that checks on this can and should be made. In the end, how can you have a systems that you can completely trust with human and technological error always in the equation?

  • Dude Dudeson

To be fair to Stan Stanart, using a secure modem to dial to a private phone line IS NOT the same thing as being connected to the Internet, any more than Jon Oliver calling his mom. Everyone knows moms can't use the internet. In reality, a secure modem dialing another secure modem in a secure location would actually be pretty good security practice. The data would be encrypted in flight, and unless someone tapped the line, nobody could see it anyway. This is not to say that there are no voting machines that connect to the internet, just that this was not an example of such a system.

Democracy in its current form is horribly flawed, because it equals the votes of illiterate, stupid and selfish with those of the honest, educated and compassionate people. And I think we all know which of those produce more offspring and raise it to their resemblance.
